Samuel Johnson was one of the great prose stylists in the English language, and it is a grave risk to appear in his presence without being a tolerably good writer oneself/5(9). The Life of Samuel Johnson is many things: charming, witty, vivacious, absorbing, edifying, beautiful; part philosophy and part history, with some politics and religion on the side.
